Choosing and updating beneficiaries
Why beneficiary choices matter, what primary and contingent designations mean, and when to review them.
Name the people or organizations intentionally
A beneficiary is the person, people, trust, or eligible organization designated to receive a policy benefit. Naming beneficiaries clearly can help the insurer follow your wishes, subject to policy terms and applicable law.
Understand primary and contingent choices
Primary beneficiaries are generally first in line to receive a benefit. Contingent beneficiaries may receive it if no primary beneficiary can. Ask the insurer how multiple beneficiaries and percentages are handled.
Review after major life changes
Marriage, divorce, a birth, a death, or a change in family circumstances can be a reason to review your designations. Follow the insurer’s process for updates and keep confirmation with your important records.
